Jack LaLanne Passed Away Today

Jack LaLanne passed away today of respiratory failure due to pneumonia. I still remember as a young girl watching Jack LaLanne's TV fitness show. He spent decades talking about healthful benefits of exercise and fitness and exercised daily up until his death. He was 96! He was a self-confessed sugar-and junk-food addict as a child. Bob Barker told The Associated Press Today that, "He never lost enthusiasm for life and physical fitness."
Today, after attending a local gardening class at Peaceful Gardens, we watched Dr. Russell Blaylock's DVD all on the effects of sugar called "Nutrition and Behavior." The hidden sugars in processed foods. Dr. Russell Blaylock’s book, “Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills,” is an eye opening book.
Read your labels and better yet eat things without a label such as your fruits, vegetables, nuts, & seeds. There are so many good recipes out there available to learn to make foods that taste great and burst with flavor. You can find a wealth of recipes online and videos to watch people demonstrate recipes and make it right before your eyes. You will start craving those raw food choices as your taste buds change. I've been vegan for about seventeen years and it wasn't until I had some health issues that I have had prior to even becoming vegan seventeen years ago that I finally started on a gluten-free first with no response and then doing what I wasn't ready to do, GO RAW! Yes, I went kicking and screaming at first. As each day goes by I see many benefits of my choices. I have now really embraced raw food and enjoy sharing what I’ve learned along the way. There are probably groups that meet in your local area if you start asking around at health clubs, health food stores, gardening centers, and wellness centers. Don't give up your persistence will pay off. Your body will thank you! Most important talk to your doctor about a good diet plan.

Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine Book Review

Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine

Gabriel Cousens, M.D.

and the Tree of Life Cafe Chefs

North Atlantic Books

Medical researchers have found that a high-fat, high-sugar diet, combined with environmental pollutants and stress, can lead to a buildup of toxins in the body collectively known as chronic degenerative disease. Here holistic physician Gabriel Cousens addresses the dangers of foods that have been genetically modified, treated with pesticides, microwaved, and irradiated—and presents an alternative diet of whole, natural, organic, and raw foods that can reverse chronic disease and restore vitality.

Both a guide to natural health and a cookbook, Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine features over 250 revolutionary vegan recipes from chefs at the Tree of Life Cafe, from Buttery Butternut Porridge to Raw-violis to Carob Coconut Cream Eclairs. Combining modern research on metabolism, ecological consciousness, and a rainbow of live foods, Dr. Cousens dishes up comprehensive, practical, and delectable solutions to the woes of the Western diet.

Here is a break down of the sections of the book:

Matthew Kenney Everyday Raw Baked Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

Today my raw food lunch was out of Matthew Kenny's cookbook Everyday Raw. This vegan raw recipe is called "baked macaroni and cheese." I halved the recipe to make a small amount. I'm marking it in the index as a great recipe. So I thought I'd share a photo of it for you. If you have the book you'll see a completed version although they do have a color photo in the book too and if you don't have the book you will see what the book has to offer. I've tried his chili also and it was great too.

Matthew Kenny's comment on the recipe is:
When I was working with more cooked food, one of the dishes I was most known for was Truffled Macaroni and Cheese. I swore I would never make it again, until Kristen introduced this recipe to a comfort food class she was teaching. I had two servings of it the first time I tried it.

Here are a few of the pie recipes in chapter two. Coconut Cream Pie, Pecan Pie, Cherry Pie, and Key Lime Pie.

The cake chapter has Coffee Cake, Aloha Cake, Tiramisu, Mocha Cake, Lemon-Poppy Seed Cake, and Banana-Walnut Cake.

Chapter four is cheesecakes and I already had the opportunity to try the Mint-Chip Cheesecake. Right now writing this I would love another piece. It says they are "guilt free" and oh how I know I'm trying more of these recipes like the lemon Cheesecake, Strawberry Cheesecake, Pecan Turtle Cheesecake and Coconut-Lime Cheesecake.

Chapter 5 is the dehydration chapter and some of the recipes are Pecan-Fudge Brownies, Lemon-Cashew Cookies, Pistachio Baklava, Cinnamon Buns with Macadamia Carmel and Cannoli.

Many easy to follow recipes and did I say they all look fab!

Spinach Smoothie Recipe

How to make healthy smoothies ! Vegan Smoothie Recipes!
Vegan raw green smoothies are amazingly great! We start our day everyday with a good and green smoothie and I use my Blendtec high powered blender that I love! Nutrient and fiber filled. Green smoothies are easy to digest. When well blended, most of the cells in the greens and fruit are ruptured, making the valuable nutrients easy for the body to assimilate. I push the greens with my family and friends. They all know me by now. We live in a fast paced lifestyle and just grab the quickest and easiest to prepare foods. Green smoothies taste good and make me feel good. A green smoothie is surprisingly filling and helps you maintain your energy and focus throughout the day. I try to get 50-60% greens in my smoothies. Don't get surprised when you start craving more and more greens in your diet. My kids make these for breakfast in the mornings.

2 handfuls spinach
2 huge chard leaves
1 parsley sprig
1 apple
1 orange
1 banana
2 tablespoons golden flax seeds
1 tablespoon super food
1 tablespoon beet root powder
Enough water to blend into a nice green smoothie.

Tribest FreshLife Sprouter Review

Tribest FreshLife Sprouter
Automatic Wheatgrass and Sprouter System

First, if you have never seen one of these in person they hold a huge amount of sprouts which is great. I usually do sprouts and never have enough of a supply so this is a huge plus. Overall dimensions: 13.58” H x 11.22” W x 11.22” D. Next, the additional barrel is another huge plus because you could do sprouts in one barrel and wheat grass in the other. Let me tell you another huge, huge plus, you add the water and it does all the work for you. Just make sure you do change it every 1-2 days. I changed my everyday and added about 4 drops of grapefruit seed extract for any bacteria issues which I didn't have at all.

When your box arrives it comes with everything you need to start growing right away. I use sprouts for salads, sandwiches, add to smoothies and just to eat. Then wheatgrass to juice. Wheatgrass builds the blood rich in chlorophyll. I could go on and on about sprouts and wheatgrass benefits. Live foods are the best!
The FreshLife is easy to use, easy to clean! Using organic seeds ensures that you are growing fresh batches of chemical and pesticide free harvests each and every time. It is not just a wheatgrass growing machine! Grow all types of sprouts and enjoy them without having to hassle with the growing process. This unit gives a constant supply of fresh oxygen and water to your sprouts making it painless to grow those nutrient enriched sprouts everyone so desperately needs but doesn't want to grow! Approximate Growing Times: Alfalfa 5-6 days Broccoli 5-6 days Corn 5-6 days Mung beans 4-5 days Radish Seeds 5-6 days Sesame 5-6 days Soybeans 4-5 days Sunflower 5-6 days Wheat 4-5 days.

Steve Meyerowitz, known worldwide as the "Sproutman," said "the Freshlife Automatic sprouter by Tribest is the best sprouter I've seen in a long time.

For only pennies a day, you’ll enjoy these delicious and nutritious “baby vegetables” without using soil, chemicals, special lighting, wiring or plumbing. Not only are sprouted vegetables delicious, but the contain 10-50 times more vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes than at any other time during their life cycle. An entire spectrum of flavors await as you’ll produce their life cycle.
